FAQ: Shipping Rates & Sales Tax for Multi-Recipient Orders

Answers about per-recipient shipping calculation, local delivery with Zapiet and Bird, shipping method columns in uploads, and multi-state tax handling.

How are shipping rates calculated for each recipient?

Shipping is calculated separately for each recipient based on their shipping destination, the products in their order, and the shipping method you've configured. You can use Shopify's built-in carrier rates, a fixed flat rate, free shipping, or a custom shipping API. See Send Types and Generation Settings.

Does Send To Many support local delivery for multi-recipient orders?

Yes. If you use Zapiet or Bird for local delivery on your store, Send To Many integrates with both. Recipients within your delivery zones can receive orders via local delivery, with date selection based on your Zapiet or Bird configuration. You can also mix fulfillment methods so some recipients get local delivery while others get standard shipping. See Zapiet Integration and Bird Integration.

Can I include shipping methods and dates in my upload file?

Yes. You can add a shipping method column to your spreadsheet using the exact rate name from your store's shipping settings. You can also include a shipping date column to specify delivery dates per recipient. Both columns are mapped during the upload step and applied to each recipient's order during generation.

How is sales tax calculated for recipients in different states?

Tax is calculated separately for each recipient based on their shipping destination using your Shopify tax settings (including third-party services like Avalara or TaxJar). On the aggregate order, tax appears as a single summed line item. The per-recipient breakdown is available on individual recipient orders and in analytics exports. See Sales Tax Calculation and Reporting.
