Checkout updates: digital products, staff order entry, and more
Since the new multi-recipient checkout launched in May, we've shipped a steady stream of improvements. Here are the highlights for merchants running gifting and bulk orders.
Digital products and gift cards
Multi-recipient checkout now supports digital products and gift cards alongside physical items. Shoppers can send a gift card to one recipient and a physical product to another in the same order, and digital items skip shipping rate calculation automatically. This opens up mixed sends where some recipients get something shipped and others get delivered by email.
Staff order entry
Your team can now place multi-recipient orders on behalf of customers directly from the storefront. Staff mode lets an authorized account search for a customer, pull in their saved addresses to auto-fill recipient cards, build the order, and hand it off for invoicing. It's full-service gifting without asking the customer to do the data entry themselves.

Staff order entry runs as its own checkout configuration, so you can give your team a dedicated entry page separate from your customer-facing checkout. See Staff Order Entry for Multi-Recipient Orders for setup.
A simpler cart page: one recipient or many
A new cart page mode lets shoppers choose between a single recipient and multiple recipients right from the cart, with a toggle at the top. Stores that sell both single gifts and bulk sends no longer need separate paths: one cart handles both. You can enable it and point it at your theme's native cart selectors in settings.

See How Shoppers Find Multi-Recipient Checkout for details.
More control over shipping rates
Per-recipient shipping rate filters give you finer control over which rates appear for each recipient based on their location and products. A new "applies when" option lets a filter take effect only when a matching rate is available, so you can layer rules without accidentally hiding every option. See shipping and delivery options.
Smaller improvements
A few other updates worth knowing about: you can now set a maximum number of recipients per order in checkout settings, add-on product cards support a variant select dropdown so shoppers can pick a variant for recommended add-ons, and manual Sends let you bulk apply custom shipping rates across recipients on Step 4. We also prefill gift messages from the cart onto the first recipient and validate image uploads against Shopify's size limits before checkout.
